4G Wireless Broadband and Mobile Coverage in coming to the Chatham Islands!

It is with great excitement we are announcing that the Chatham Islands will soon have 4G enabled broadband and mobile phone coverage in most areas via the Government-funded Rural Connectivity Group (RCG) and Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) 2 programme.

There are five cell sites to be built and the network will be switched on once all sites are built. This is scheduled to be done in stages through the months of September and October 2021.

Wireless Nation has been providing this affordable rural wireless broadband technology to Kiwis all across the country since the technology was introduced in 2013, and are looking forward to connecting your home or business when it becomes available.

You are in good hands, with us having recently been voted Best Wireless Service Provider 2020 (Broadband Compare TUANZ Awards) for our work with homes, business, boats and motorhomes using this exact technology that is coming to your island.

We are proud to have invested in the Chatham Islands via our Wireless over Satellite solutions back in 2012 to provide you connectivity using satellite technology, however, it’s time to wave goodbye and say hello to a newer, better connected world of cellular broadband and mobile technology.

How does the new technology work?

RBI Wireless uses long range fixed wireless towers to provide broadband coverage to homes and businesses within range. It will enable you to stream video and use multiple devices connected to the internet at once.

As a bonus, you will be able to bundle a mobile phone plan with us for easy, simplified billing.

What area will be covered?

Most of the islands residents will receive fast 4G wireless broadband from the new RCG network, however until the new network is live, tested and optimised the reach of the network can only be predicted.  At this stage the predictions show that the network will not reach the far South West Coast or the far North West Coast.  Crown Infrastructure Partners is looking at options for residents that may not be covered by the RCG network to receive service.
