Equipment
Powerful 4G or 5G Modem (required)
There’s an investment of $299 (already discounted for NZMCA members) for a powerful 4G Modem. This provides home-grade internet on the road and reaches further than mobile phone reception.
You can upgrade to a 5G-enabled modem for $449 if you need faster speeds in urban areas. Not sure if you need a 5G modem? Check our comparison here.
NZMCA Portable WiFi requires a Wireless Nation supplied modem to operate on the network. You’ll need to be in 4G/5G coverage for the broadband to work, 5G speeds only available in 5G coverage with a 5G capable modem, otherwise coverage will default to 4G where available.
12-24V DC Surge Protection Adaptor (optional)
You can add our 12–24V DC Surge Protection Adaptor for $99.99 during signup. It’s specifically designed in NZ for use with our modems and motorhome power systems, allowing the modem to run safely off 12–24V while protecting it from voltage spikes. Please note: the modem includes a 230/240V wall plug for mains power.

The average peak hour 4G speed is 44Mbps download, and 17Mbps upload. Actual speeds may be faster or slower, depending on your distance to the nearest tower, your location, and how many people are using that same tower simultaneously. Full Speed Data means as fast as the cell tower will allow at that time. Speeds are from the Commerce Commission’s Measuring Broadband New Zealand (MBNZ) October 2025 report.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the modem off 12-24V?
Yes, the modem can run off 12-24V. It comes with a 230/240V to 12-24V wall plug for mains power. If you want to run the modem off your battery/cigarette lighter plug, you can add our 12–24V DC Surge Protection Adaptor for $99.99 during signup. It’s specifically designed in NZ for use with our modems and motorhome power systems, allowing the modem to run safely off 12–24V while protecting it from voltage spikes.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
NB: some customers may require a new SIM card depending on which plan is selected.
What about my home security system when I'm on the road?
We’ve designed a solution specifically for this. It’s a low-data plan used as a secondary connection. This means you can travel using your primary connection (NZMCA Portable WiFi) and leave the home security modem at home to power your security systems. You can find out more here.
How much power does the modem use?
Tthe 4G modem (Deco) uses 12 Watts when busy and 7.2 Watts when idle. The 5G modem (H153) uses 12 Watts when busy and 8.4 Watts when idle, both essentially the same as an LED light bulb.
What happens when I run out of full speed data?
Your data will run at full speed until you hit your data cap, after which your connection will continue to run at a maximum of up to 1.2Mbps until the end of the month at no extra charge.
You can also upgrade your plan (if a higher plan is available at your address) which will take effect in the following month.
