How to stay connected on the road

Travel advice for staying connected while you’re on the road

From messenger apps to personal travel blogs, find the best ways to keep in touch

Staying in touch while travelling used to be a chore, from overpriced long-distance phone calls, to getting postcards lost in the mail. Luckily for us, with the internet in our pockets, there are so many ways to make our travel experience easier.

Whether you’re heading on a short getaway or a 6-month cross-country trip, there are tons of ways that you can stay in touch with friends and family.

To help you stay connected while you’re on the road, we’re sharing our favourite travel advice and tips for keeping in touch.

Try video chatting

A picture says a thousand words, a video even more. With clever little devices in our back pockets, it’s easy for us to see our friends and family face to face, even when we’re halfway across the world.

Apps like Skype or Google Hangouts are reliable and easy to use and if you’ve got an iPhone or Apple device, Facetime is the go-to way to talk to your friends and family face-to-face. And hey, why not show them the sights while you’re at it?

Start a personal travel blog

These days, just about anyone can jump online and start a blog. Sites like WordPress and Wix make it easy to create your own personal travel blog and update it how you like!

A blog is a great way to keep your loved ones updated with your travels without having to send lots of photos and messages. You can post about your latest destination, favourite food and even your own travel advice and tips – the possibilities are endless!

The bonus is that you’ve got an online travel diary that you can fondly look back at when reminiscing about your travels.

Create short travel videos

When you’re on the road, visiting place to place, you don’t always have time to write down your thoughts and messages.

Another great way to document your trip and keep your loved ones updated is by creating short travel videos. Press record on your phone and capture short messages while sharing the places you’re visiting.

Apps like Steller and Instagram are great for getting those quick snap and videos and let you quickly upload them so you don’t have to waste space on your phone.

Join a social media community

Social media is not just a great place to keep in touch, but a great place to find like-minded people and communities, like Motorhome Friends NZ.

Jump on Facebook and you can find thousands of local groups, all sharing tips, events and advice for fellow travellers!

Send a postcard

Modern technology is great but sometimes a good ol’ fashioned postcard is all you need!

If you’re not too stressed about keeping in regular contact and want to just send your friends and family a small memento of your trip, browse the local shops and find the perfect postcard to capture the moment.

Start a group chat

Messenger apps are a great way to stay connected with the easy option of group chats so you can connect with all your loved ones in one go!

Try Whatsapp and create a group chat with your friends or family. You can send them messages, photos, videos and even video call!
