How much data does streaming content like Netflix or Lightbox use?

< Back
Different streaming services such as Netflix, Lightbox, YouTube, etc. send you different amounts of data per hour of streaming.

In most cases these services automatically adjust the stream to suit your connection speed. I.e. the faster your connection the more data they send to you to give you a higher resolution picture for maximum enjoyment.

Usually these services offer the option in their settings to adjust the data they send to you while streaming.

As a rule of thumb:

  • SD (standard definition) uses about 1GB per hour
  • HD (high definition) uses about 3GB per hour (most common)
  • SHD/4k (super high definition) uses between 7GB and 15GB per hour
