What is WPS?

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a built-in network feature designed to simplify how older wireless devices connect to a secure Wi-Fi network. Instead of manually entering a complex wireless security key, you can press a physical or digital button to pair compatible hardware.

  • Security Risk: Because WPS relies on a simplified pairing window, leaving it permanently active or using it frequently introduces security vulnerabilities to your home network. We strongly recommend typing out your standard Wi-Fi password or scanning a Wi-Fi QR code whenever possible.
  • Device Limits: Modern Apple iOS (iPhone/iPad), macOS, and Android mobile devices do not support WPS connections due to these security risks. WPS is now primarily used for older wireless accessories, such as legacy home printers or network range extenders.

How to Activate WPS on Your Wireless Nation modem?

If you must use WPS for an older device, follow the specific steps below for your hardware model.

If you have a TP-Link Deco X-58 modem: No change needed

If you have a Huawei B315 / B525 modem:

  1. Locate the physical WPS button found on the top panel of your router hardware.
  2. Press and hold down the physical WPS button for exactly 5 seconds.
  3. Release the button when the Wi-Fi indicator light on the front of the modem begins flashing continuously.
  4. You now have 2 minutes to activate the WPS pairing function on your external device.
  5. The blinking modem light will return to solid status once pairing completes or the timeout window expires.

If you have Huawei B618 / B818 Modem:

  1. Locate the physical WPS button located on the front face panel of your upright modem tower.
  2. Press and hold down the WPS button for 5 seconds.
  3. Release the button when the integrated Wi-Fi status light starts blinking.
  4. Activate the corresponding WPS wireless option on your external device within 2 minutes.

Troubleshooting WPS Failure

If your device refuses to establish a stable wireless connection using WPS, walk through these fundamental diagnostic checks:

  • Move Closer: Move the accessory device closer to your modem during the pairing attempt. Signal interference can cause handshake failures.
  • Watch the Clock: If you don’t activate WPS on your external device within 120 seconds of pressing the modem button, the handshake window will close. If this happens, simply start the process over.
  • Firmware Conflict: If the connection continues to time out, the device’s older wireless chipset may be incompatible with modern WPA3 network encryption protocols. The simplest fix is to manually enter your Wi-Fi password on the device screen or application.
