3G Network Deactivation: How to Stay Connected

< Back

Overview

Telecommunications network providers across New Zealand have officially closed down their legacy 3G mobile networks. This spectrum has been repurposed to provide faster, more secure, and more reliable 4G and 5G coverage.

For the vast majority of Wireless Nation customers, this transition requires no action. However, if you are using an older mobile handset, an early-generation wireless modem, or a legacy rural voice system, your service may be impacted.

⚠️ Critical Safety Warning

If your mobile phone is a 3G-only device, or if it does not support VoLTE (Voice over LTE) calling, it can no longer make or receive phone calls—including emergency calls to 111. Please check your device compatibility immediately using the steps below.

Before You Start: Check Your Device Compatibility

A phone can sometimes display a “4G” icon for mobile data but still rely on the old 3G network to process voice calls. To confirm your phone is fully compliant, use the official, free industry verification service:

  • Free-Text Verification: From your mobile device, send a text message containing the word 3G to the number 550.
  • The Response: You will receive a free, automated text reply confirming whether your device is fully compatible with modern networks or if it requires attention.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Enable VoLTE

If your device is 4G-capable but you cannot make calls, ensure VoLTE is switched on in your software settings.

For Apple iPhone (iPhone 6s and newer)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Mobile (or Cellular).
  3. Select Mobile Data Options (or Cellular Data Options).
  4. Tap Voice & Data.
  5. Ensure 4G or 5G is selected, and verify that the VoLTE toggle is switched ON (if the toggle is visible on your iOS version).

For Android Devices (Samsung, Oppo, Xiaomi, etc.)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connections or Network & Internet.
  3. Select Mobile Networks.
  4. Look for VoLTE Calls or Enhanced 4G LTE Mode and toggle the switch to ON.Note: Settings menus can vary slightly depending on your Android manufacturer. Use the settings search bar and type “VoLTE” if you cannot locate it.

Impact on Wireless Nation Hardware

Wireless & Portable Wi-Fi Modems

  • Status: Safe. All standard Wireless Nation home wireless and portable Wi-Fi modems deployed in recent years utilise 4G and 5G data pathways. Your internet connectivity will continue without interruption.
  • Exceptions: If you are using a legacy, third-party mobile modem purchased prior to 2015, it may fail to connect.

RBI Voice Services (Rural Broadband Initiative)

  • Our legacy landline-replacement services running via older rural wireless desktop systems require 4G configuration.
  • If you have a historical RBI Voice service that has stopped working, contact our support team immediately to arrange a priority hardware replacement.

Business Equipment & IoT

  • If your business operates legacy cellular infrastructure—such as older EFTPOS terminals, remote telemetry tracking modules, or smart security alarms—they will fail to sync if they rely solely on a 3G SIM module.

Troubleshooting Connectivity Issues

If your mobile device or broadband unit has lost service entirely, try these sequential troubleshooting steps:

  1. Perform a Full System Restart: Turn your smartphone or wireless broadband modem completely off. Wait 60 seconds, then power it back up. This forces the SIM card to seek out and register onto the modern 4G/5G towers.
  2. Update Device Software: Connect to a local Wi-Fi connection, check your device settings for any pending Operating System (OS) updates, and install them. Network carrier updates are frequently bundled into these files.
  3. Test the SIM Card: If your phone is older, your physical SIM card might be outdated. Contact us to request a free replacement 4G/5G-ready SIM card.
