3G Network Shutdown in New Zealand
You might have heard about the upcoming 3G network shutdown in New Zealand, and we want to assure you that for most Wireless Nation customers, this transition will be smooth and seamless.
What’s Happening?
Telecommunication providers in New Zealand are progressively shutting down their older 3G networks. This is part of a global shift towards more advanced and efficient mobile technologies like 4G and 5G.
Will This Affect Me?
For the vast majority of Wireless Nation customers, the answer is no. Here’s why:
- Most Devices Are Already 4G Capable: The good news is that most mobile phones in New Zealand, especially those purchased in recent years, are 4G capable. This means your phone already uses the faster 4G network for calls and data.
- Our Wireless & Portable WiFi Modems are 4G: All Wireless Nation wireless and portable WiFi modems already support 4G broadband, so your internet service will continue to work without interruption. Less than 40 of our longstanding RBI Voice services may need an upgrade, but we will contact you if that is the case.
- 4G is Here to Stay: The 4G network will remain available for years to come, providing reliable and fast mobile services.
Mobile Phone Services
Most mobile phones purchased after 2013 will have 4G capability and continue to work.
What if I’m Still Using 3G?
Only a very small number of our customers are still using 3G-only mobile phones. If your device is one of them, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!
- We’ll Contact You: We will be proactively contacting any Wireless Nation customer whose device is identified as being 3G-only. This is to ensure a smooth transition and help you explore your options, whether upgrading your device or finding a suitable alternative.
- Check Your Device: You can easily check if your mobile phone is 3G compatible by texting “3G” to 550. You’ll receive an SMS reply letting you know your device’s compatibility. This text message to check is free of charge.
Why the Shift to 4G and 5G?
4G and 5G networks offer significant advantages, including:
- Faster Speeds: Enjoy quicker downloads, smoother streaming, and more responsive browsing.
- Improved Capacity: Handle more data traffic, leading to a better experience for everyone.
- Enhanced Reliability: More robust and stable connections.
